Introduction

Share with us how important do you think is conservation of water in Singapore.

Background

Water may seem plentiful and the supply endless whenever you turn on the tap but this is not so. There is a need to save every precious drop of water now, because:
1) Water is a scarce and precious resource in Singapore. Singapore's water resources are very limited. Already 50 percent of our land is used for water catchment.
2) In 1950, when Singapore's population was 1 million, our daily consumption averaged 142,000 cubic metres. In 2005, with a population of about 4.4 million, our consumption rose to 1,296,000 cubic metres. This means that while the population grew by 4 times, water consumption increased 9 times!3) Conserving and valuing our scarce water resources become everyone’s responsibility.

Problem statement

In what way can a responsible citizen of Singapore help to conserve water?

Activity 1 – Gather Facts

In groups of 5s, study the PUB bills that you have collected.
1) Calculate the mean amount of water used at home per month per household.
2) Write a paragraph to comment on your monthly usage of water by comparing to the national average (15 cubic metre per household). One group member will key in the group’s response and publish it on the group’s blog (the facilitator will assign a blog to your group).

Activity 2 – Problem analysis

In groups of 5s, do an analysis on the amount of water used at home.
1) Discuss what do you think constitute to this amount of water used. (eg: kitchen, car, toilet, human factor)
(a) If the consumption is more than national average, they need to find out the factors that lead to the high usage of water.
(b) If less than national average, they need to find out what are the good practices they are using at home. One group member will key in the group’s response and publish it on the group’s blog.2) Access another group’s blog to read on their comments. Provide feedback on the group’s comment on their usage of water.

Activity 3 – Generate alternatives

In groups of 5s, generate ways to reduce water consumption at home.
1) Come out with ways to reduce water usage at home.
(a) You can do research using the internet or
(b) come out with innovative ways on your own. Some useful links are found at the side of the blog.
One group member will key in the group’s method and publish it on the group’s blog.2) Implement and try out the various methods that you have come out with during the June holidays.

Activity 4 - Evaluation

In groups of 5s, evaluate on the effectiveness of the methods that you have come out with.
1) Collect the bills for June and calculate the mean for each household.
2) Compare the mean amount of water used before implementation and after implementation of the method that you have come out with.
3) Write a paragraph to comment on the effectiveness of the methods experimented. One group member will key in the group’s response and publish it on the group’s blog.
4) Access another group’s blog to read on their comment. Provide feedback on the group’s comment on the effectiveness of the methods they have implemented.
